Computer Maintenance Tips

Ensure your computer is running up to speed by performing the following tasks.

Always

  • Install a surge suppressor to prevent damage from sudden power surges.
  • Make sure to register your software. Ensure you are keeping your software up to date, most software include automatic updating features. Be sure to read the documentation for your software to see how to update.
  • Install Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware software. Make sure they stay up to date and scan your complete hard drive once a week.
  • Keep all discs and manuals in a safe place, you will need them eventually if problems arise.

Weekly

  • Run disk scan and defrag to check for corrupt files and hard drive problems.
  • Perform a system cleanup and delete all unused temp files.
  • Backup all your important files to a remote location or on external mediums like cd-rw and dvd-rw discs.
  • Delete your cookies and temporary internet files.
  • Update your virus definitions, perform a complete system scan to prevent malware attacks on your computer.

Quarterly

  • Have your computer cleaned from the inside out. Dust can cause many problems including overheating and hardware failure. We recommend you let a professional do this for you. Damage can occur from a simple static charge from your body, always be careful if you decide to do this yourself!.
  • Have your operating system cleaned out and malware removed. This is the easiest thing to do to prevent problems down the road from occuring.
